Chapter three began with a quiet evening and nothing left to prove. Mara and Daniel had spent two chapters circling each other, trading glances and half finished sentences. Now they were finally alone in her apartment, with warm lamplight on the walls and the city humming far below the window.

She took his hand and led him to the sofa. Neither of them hurried. Daniel kissed her slowly, as if he had been waiting a long time to learn the shape of her mouth, and she answered with a soft laugh against his lips. When she slid down onto her knees in front of him, her eyes stayed on his the whole time.

Her touch was patient and deliberate. She listened to every breath he took and let it guide her, teasing him with her lips and then taking him deeper. Daniel leaned his head back and let out a low groan. His fingers tangled gently in her hair, never pulling, only holding on to the moment.

When he could finally speak, he whispered her name and drew her up beside him. Then it was his turn. He kissed his way down her body, unhurried and attentive, until her hands gripped the cushions and her whole body arched toward him. She told him exactly what she wanted, and he gave it to her with a devotion that made the room feel very quiet and very warm.

Later they lay tangled together, breathless and smiling. There were no secrets left between them, only the easy comfort of two adults who had chosen each other. Outside the night went on, but here, being together was enough.
